I wonder if anybody else feels like it was a pity not to have been able
to sail a second race on Sunday? I am not sure what the race committee
was seeing, but the airports were reporting mid-teens with gusts at
18-19 kts. I doubt that there was much more than that on the water. A
lot of people were retiring, but I didn't hear any reports of damage or
distress. I think I'm not the only one who thought the day was eminently
sailable. Certainly we would be sailing this kind of wind in a major
regatta, and it would be nice to be able to practice for it on our home
turf, on those relatively rare occasions when windy city lives up to its
reputation.
Does anybody else in the fleet think it might be appropriate to send a
note to the race committee from the fleet, saying roughly that we thank
them for the good job that they did this weekend, but wish they would
bear in mind that, while some sailors might feel inclined to retire from
conditions like Sunday's, others live for this stuff, and we'd be
grateful if they would not be quite so quick to cancel sailing when the
wind picks up into the upper-moderate range? I'm sure we could phrase
this in a way that doesn't make us sound like a bunch of ingrates.
