[etchells-fleet11] race committee service

All,

 

I filled in my entry today and encountered the requirement of serving on the
race committee. I was surprised to find that the days offered include the
One Design Verve and the Etchells Great Lakes and North Americans weekends
(which leaves three dates for those intending to sail these events, and
fewer if you already have plans on other weekends.)

 

I would like to remind the Etchells fleet that one design sailors are the
ONLY race participants in the Chicago Yacht Club required to be members of
the Club (offshore, power, cruising and dinghy sailors do not have to be
members and only need to pay a fee for their race committee--no volunteer
time is required).

 

The fact that the RC runs out of people year in and year out after the Mac
is a management issue, not a fact. 10 RC members will serve a Monroe Beer
Can evening each week after Mac while no one will sign up for a full day of
One Design service (why not, it's only 2 hours and there is a party and a
band afterward). If the RC would take responsibility for all racing fleets
of the Club and require a certain number of One Design days after Mac, we
wouldn't miss our own racing to administer the courses.

 

As an RC PRO, it is very difficult to train sailors to do RC work while
watching the course and getting races started and finished accurately.
Having us volunteer without training will not make our racing better, in my
opinion.
