All,
This is a philosophical question that needs broad fleet input and
consideration.
On the one hand, we race a one design boat and have chosen it for it's
tight rules. We join the club because that is a fleet rule.
On the other hand, we want to build fleet participation. It is hard
enough to find consistent and reliable crew without worrying about
weight, too.
In Florida this weekend, adhering to the weight rule was discussed as
the first three events are not weigh in regattas. The consensus
opinion was that the weight rule should be obeyed whether we weigh in
or not.
I suggest that we continue our existing policy with a change to
alerting the fleet on email instead of a note to the fleet captain so
everyone knows when someone is sailing heavy. Then, for one season
only, we allow this policy to apply to all season races. (The special
series races seem not to require CYC membership and adherence to the
weight rule although I do not understand why the club wants to give
these beautiful trophies to non CYC sailors.)
Thanks,
Betsy Altman
